Nearly everyone loves free speech but most feel uneasy when you suggest that it should be absolute
However why is this? Why is it reasonable for the government to decide what is 'hateful'?
Worse yet, do you not think the same laws used to prevent people from calling you a slur will be used by those very same people in the future to prevent your speech?
It is foolish to think that laws used to 'protect' couldn't be used to oppress and extinguish legitimate thought as well
This is because all government mandated 'protection' is really just a futile attempt at trading freedom for safety
So my opinion is this ; the state should not meddle in speech, for this is bound to give leeway to the authoritarians, it isn't guaranteed to lead to oppression but it's a great risk nonethless
Also, it is just plain immoral to implement anyway as are most laws of this kind, the state has no right to be a nanny to us.
But perhaps I am blinded by my bias, I am not too far off from an anarchist after all at least in my hatred for the state, as always feel free to share your thoughts :-)
